Melioidose aguda tipicamente se apresenta como uma pneumonia aguda subserquente a inalação ou inoculação da bactéria causadora, Burkholderia pseudomallei. Pode evoluir para choque séptico fulminante com abcessos múltiplos nos pulmões, fígado, baço, rins ou cérebro. A mortalidade é significativa, que na maioria dos casos está associada a fatores de risco preexistentes, especialmente diabetes, alcoolismo ou doença renal crônica. A infecção em crianças pode se manifestar com parotidite aguda. | |||||||||||||||

This may progress to fulminant septic shock with multiple abscesses in the lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys or brain. There is a significant mortality, which in the majority of cases is associated with preexisting risk factors, especially diabetes, alcoholism or chronic renal disease.
