Chronic primary abdominal pain syndrome is chronic pain localised in the abdominal region that is associated with significant emotional distress or functional disability. The distinct anatomical location is compatible with typical referral pain patterns from specific internal organs. The symptoms are not better explained by a diagnosis of chronic secondary abdominal pain. Chronic primary abdominal pain syndrome is multifactorial: biological, psychological and social factors contribute to the pain syndrome. The diagnosis is appropriate independently of identified biological or psychological contributors unless another diagnosis would better account for the presenting symptoms.
