É caracterizada por três dimensões: 1) sensação de falta de energia ou exaustão; 2) aumento da distância mental em relação ao próprio trabalho, ou sentimentos negativos ou cínicos relacionados ao próprio trabalho; e 3) uma sensação de ineficácia e falta de realização. O esgotamento se refere especificamente a fenômenos no contexto de trabalho e não deve ser utilizado na descrição de experiências em outras áreas da vida.
