O espru tropical é uma síndrome que envolve todo o intestino delgado que causa diarreia aguda ou crônica e má absorção de nutrientes de gravidade progressiva e que resulta em desnutrição e anemia por deficiência de ácido fólico. O transtorno ocorre apenas entre pessoas (principalmente adultos) que visitam, ou são residentes, de algumas regiões tropicais e subtropicais. As alterações histológicas consistem em alongamento da área da cripta e alargamento e encurtamento das vilosidades com inflamação crônica do intestino delgado. A causa do espru tropical não é conhecida, mas níveis excessivos de alguns tipos de bactérias no intestino delgado foram sugeridos como implicados, e a terapia antimicrobiana pode resultar na cura das anormalidades intestinais. | |||||||||||||||

The disorder occurs only among persons (mostly adults) who visit, or are residents of, certain tropical and subtropical areas. Histological changes consist of lengthening of the crypt area and broadening and shortening of the villi with chronic inflammation of small intestine. The cause of tropical sprue is not known, but excess levels of certain types of bacteria in the small intestines have been suggested, and antimicrobial therapy may result in cure of the intestinal abnormalities. | |||||||||||||||
