O enfisema é definido como o aumento anormal e permanente dos espaços aéreos distais aos bronquíolos terminais. Isto é acompanhado pela destruição das paredes alveolares, sem fibrose evidente (ou seja, não há fibrose visível a olho nu). This is accompanied by destruction of the airspace walls, without obvious fibrosis (i.e. there is no fibrosis visible to the naked eye).
