Pitiose é uma infecção com risco de vida pelo oomiceto Pythium insidiosum. Embora a infecção em animais ocorra amplamente em todo o mundo, a pitiose humana está em sua maioria confinada à Tailândia e, com exceção da doença ocular, está intimamente associada a doença hematológica subjacente, especialmente talassemia. Há uma alta mortalidade em pacientes com doença disseminada ou vascular. Nesta última forma, a invasão da parede arterial resulta em oclusão vascular e uma necessidade frequente de amputação. Pacientes com pitiose ocular geralmente requerem enucleação. Uma pequena proporção das infecções está limitada a pele e tecidos subcutâneos. | |||||||||||||||

Although infection in animals occurs widely across the world, human pythiosis is largely confined to Thailand and, with the exception of ocular disease, is closely associated with underlying haematological disease, especially thalassaemia. There is a high mortality in patients with disseminated or vascular disease. In the latter form, invasion of arterial wall results in vascular occlusion and a frequent need for amputation. Patients with ocular pythiosis commonly require enucleation. A small proportion of infections are limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. | |||||||||||||||
