Amnésia dissociativa é caracterizada por uma incapacidade de recordar memórias autobiográficas importantes, tipicamente de eventos traumáticos ou estressantes recentes, que é inconsistente com o esquecimento comum. A amnésia não ocorre exclusivamente durante outro transtorno dissociativo e não é mais bem explicada por outro transtorno mental, comportamental ou do neurodesenvolvimento. A amnésia não se deve a efeitos diretos de uma substância ou medicamento no sistema nervoso central, incluindo efeitos de abstinência, e não se deve a uma doença do sistema nervoso ou a um traumatismo cranioencefálico.
