Transtorno de pânico é caracterizado por ataques de pânico recorrentes e inesperados que não se restrigem a estímulos ou situações particulares. Ataques de pânico são episódios distintos de medo ou apreensão intensos acompanhados pelo surgimento rápido e simultâneo de vários sintomas característicos (p. ex. palpitações ou aumento da frequência cardíaca, sudorese, tremores, falta de ar, dor torácica, vertigem ou sensação de "cabeça leve", calafrios, ondas de calor, medo de morte iminente). Além disso, o transtorno de pânico é caracterizado por preocupação persistente sobre a recorrência ou o significado dos ataques de pânico, ou por comportamentos que visam evitar sua recorrência, que resultam em prejuízo significativo na funcionalidade pessoal, familiar, social, educacional, ocupacional ou em outras áreas importantes da funcionalidade. In addition, panic disorder is characterised by persistent concern about the recurrence or significance of panic attacks, or behaviours intended to avoid their recurrence, that results in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
