Demência devida ao vírus da imunodeficiência humana se desenvolve durante o curso da doença confirmada pelo HIV, na ausência de uma doença ou condição concomitante diferente da infecção pelo HIV que possa explicar as características clínicas. Embora uma variedade de padrões de déficit cognitivo sejam possíveis dependendo de onde os processos patogênicos do HIV ocorreram, os déficits seguem tipicamente um padrão subcortical com comprometimento na função executiva, velocidade de processamento, atenção e aprendizado de novas informações. O curso da demência devida ao vírus da imunodeficiência humana varia, incluindo resolução dos sintomas, declínio gradual na funcionalidade, melhora ou flutuação nos sintomas.
