Demência devida à doença de Alzheimer é a forma mais comum de demência. O início é insidioso, com o comprometimento da memória tipicamente relatado como a queixa de apresentação inicial. A evolução característica é um declínio lento mas sustentado de um nível prévio de funcionalidade cognitiva, com o comprometimento de domínios cognitivos adicionais (tais como funções executivas, atenção, linguagem, cognição e julgamento sociais, velocidade psicomotora, habilidades visuoperceptivas ou visuoespaciais) surgindo com a progressão da doença. A demência devida à doença de Alzheimer pode ser acompanhada por sintomas mentais e comportamentais, como humor deprimido e apatia nos estágios iniciais da doença e pode ser acompanhada por sintomas psicóticos, irritabilidade, agressividade, confusão, anormalidades de marcha e mobilidade, e convulsões em estágios mais avançados. Dementia due to Alzheimer disease may be accompanied by mental and behavioural symptoms such as depressed mood and apathy in the initial stages of the disease and may be accompanied by psychotic symptoms, irritability, aggression, confusion, abnormalities of gait and mobility, and seizures at later stages.
