Anemia por deficiência de ferro é provàvelmente o transtorno nutricional mais comum no mundo. Anemia por deficiência de ferro durante a gestação aumenta o risco perinatal para mães e recém nascidos; e aumenta a mortalidade infantil global. Anemia grave é o maior fator de risco associado com grande aumento da morbidade e mortalidade para crianças menores e mulheres grávidas. Reconhecimento precoce desta condição, tratamento e seguimento clinico dos pacientes são cruciais para evitar complicações como insuficiência cardíaca de alto débito. A deficiência de ferro materna durante a gestação aumenta o risco de deficiência de ferro na criança. Nos países pouco desenvolvidos, a prevalência da deficiência de ferro durante a gestação é maior que em países desenvolvidos, e a suplementação de ferro durante a gestação é benéfica. | |||||||||||||||

Iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy increases perinatal risks for mothers and neonates; and increases overall infant mortality. Severe anaemia is a major risk factor associated with greatly increased morbidity and mortality for young children and pregnant women. Prompt recognition of the condition, treatment and clinical follow-up of individuals are crucial in avoiding complications such as high-output heart failure. Maternal iron deficiency during pregnancy increases the risk of iron deficiency in the infant. In less developed countries, the prevalence of iron deficiency during pregnancy is higher than in developed countries, and iron supplementation during pregnancy is beneficial. | |||||||||||||||
