O câncer de próstata contribui significativamente para a carga geral de câncer, e é a neoplasia maligna mais comum em homens. O número de casos tem aumentado consistentemente ao longo das últimas décadas, em parte devido a maior expectativa de vida. Fator contributivos adicionais incluem aspectos do estilo de vida ocidental, tais como dietas altamente calóricas e pouca atividade física. Epidemiological data suggest that incidence rates vary among populations, with the highest rates observed in individuals of African descent, followed by those of European descent, while rates are lowest in some Asian populations. The impact of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening on mortality reduction is currently under evaluation.
