A forma mais comum de melanoma, o melanoma extensivo superficial é responsável por cerca de 70 por cento de todos os melanomas. Apresenta-se caracteristicamente como uma mácula cutânea hipercrômica assintomática, de forma assimétrica e que exibe variabilidade tanto na tonalidade quanto na intensidade do pigmento. Tem uma fase relativamente longa de extensão superficial progressiva (crescimento radial) antes de penetrar mais profundamente na derme e entrar em uma fase de crescimento vertical invasivo. | |||||||||||||||

It characteristically presents as an asymptomatic pigmented cutaneous macule which is asymmetrical in shape and displays variability in both hue and pigment intensity.
