Carcinoma de células escamosas originando-se da orofaringe. Afeta predominantemente adultos nas quinta e sexta décadas de vida e está associada ao uso de álcool e tabaco. O papilomavírus humano está presente em aproximadamente metade dos casos. É caracterizado por uma tendência de metástase precoce para os gânglios linfáticos. Quando o tumor é pequeno, os pacientes são frequentemente assintomáticos. O exame físico pode revelar lesões ou placas eritematosas ou brancas. A maioria dos pacientes apresenta doença localmente avançada. Sinais e sintomas incluem ulceração da mucosa, dor, sangramento, perda de peso, inchaço no pescoço e dificuldade para falar, mastigar e engolir. Os pacientes também podem apresentar linfonodos cervicais inchados, sem quaisquer sintomas de tumor orofaríngeo. When the tumour is small, patients are often asymptomatic. Physical examination may reveal erythematous or white lesions or plaques. The majority of patients present with locally advanced disease. Signs and symptoms include mucosal ulceration, pain, bleeding, weight loss, neck swelling, and difficulty speaking, chewing, and swallowing. Patients may also present with swollen neck lymph nodes without any symptoms from the oropharyngeal tumour.
